Sanremo's Corso Trento e Trieste is a sandy beach located in a harbour area, bounded by artificial structures. The beach is situated in a strongly urbanised tourist and residential context between the old port to the west and the new Port Sole to the east. Private beach establishments with restaurants and facilities line the shore, with the state road SS1, seafront promenade, and cycle path inland. The bathing water was classified as poor for the 2019–2022 four-year period.

Water

Coastal water body in the Ligurian Sea. The bathing area covers 0.517 km². The water is influenced by the Torrente San Francesco and Rio San Lazzaro watercourses.

Location

Sanremo, in the province of Imperia, Liguria region, Italy. The beach is accessible via the seafront promenade and cycle path, with private beach establishments providing services. The nearby state road SS1 runs along the inland edge.

Facilities

Water Quality

Classification for 2019–2022: Poor. Intensified monitoring was implemented for the 2023 season due to the poor classification. The bathing water is included within the Sanremo tourist marina and is subject to port-related pollution. A sewage pipe located approximately 720 metres south-west of the sampling station discharges offshore approximately 1.5 kilometres from the beach.

Risks

Port-related pollution sources. Heavy rainfall can increase watercourse flow and transport sewage downstream via the Torrente San Francesco and Rio San Lazzaro, which discharge directly into the bathing water. Microalgae proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has been documented in Liguria for approximately one decade, with regional monitoring showing values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre recorded in August 2019 and July 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals.
