Satama

Finland Lake 1 - Excellent

Satama is a bathing beach located in Kontiolahti, Finland, on Lake Höytiäinen. The beach is approximately 30 meters long with sand and small stones, situated in a bay adjacent to Kontiolahti harbour. It is classified as a shallow bathing area where wind direction can affect water quality. The beach is estimated to receive over 100 swimmers per day during the bathing season from 15 June to 31 August.

Water

Lake Höytiäinen, a large low-humic lake. The bathing area is shallow with sand and small stone bottom. The observation point for water quality monitoring is located 70–80 cm from the shore with sampling depth approximately 30 cm.

Location

Kontiolahti municipality, address Satamatie 4, 81100 Kontiolahti. The beach is located on the shores of Lake Höytiäinen in a harbour bay setting. Parking area and fuel station are available nearby. Facilities include a building with changing rooms and toilets.

Building with changing rooms and toilets connected to municipal sewerage. Rubbish bins. Life ring and throwing line. Notice board with instructions and contact information. Fuel station and café nearby.

Season

Official bathing season: 15 June to 31 August. Water quality monitoring consists of four samples minimum: one sample two weeks before the season begins and three samples at three-week intervals during the season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent. Monitoring results from 2018–2021 show E. coli levels consistently well below the action threshold of 1000 pmy/mpn/100 ml (ranging from <1 to 12). Enterococcus levels remain well below the action threshold of 400 pmy/mpn/100 ml (ranging from 1 to 30). No deviations or anomalies were recorded in 2018, 2019, 2020, or 2021.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) has been observed in previous years, most recently in 2010. North-westerly winds under 4 m/s may transport algae to the beach. Cyanobacteria is most likely to occur in late June. Kiukkupuro stream located 500 m to the south-west may discharge nutrient-rich and humic water from agricultural fields during heavy rainfall.
