Vierevänniemi is a bathing beach located on Lake Höytiäinen, a large oligotrophic lake in Finland. The beach features a sandy shore approximately 80 metres long, bordered partly by pine forest. The water deepens to about 5 metres at a distance of approximately 5 metres from the shore. The beach is estimated to receive more than 100 swimmers per day during the bathing season from 15 June to 31 August.

Water

Lake Höytiäinen is a large oligotrophic lake. The bathing area features a sandy bottom and a shallow gradient, deepening to approximately 5 metres at distance from shore. Wind direction can affect water quality at this beach.

Location

The beach is located in Kontiolahti municipality at Vierevänniementie, postal code 81100 Kontiolahti. A marked parking area with signage for the beach is situated nearby, along with several ball sport fields.

Facilities

Changing facilities, outdoor toilet, waste bins (5 small bins), life ring, information board with emergency call instructions. No lifeguards are present.

Season

15 June to 31 August. Water quality is monitored four times during this period: one sample taken two weeks before the season begins and three samples taken at three-week intervals during the season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Monitoring results from 2018–2021 show E. coli levels consistently below action thresholds (action limit: 1000 pmy/mpn/100 ml), with most samples showing <1 or single-digit counts. Enterococcus levels similarly remain well below the action threshold of 400 pmy/mpn/100 ml. No cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) have been detected. Water quality is monitored four times per bathing season at a depth of 30–80 centimetres in the area where most swimmers bathe.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) could potentially occur, particularly in late June under certain wind conditions (northwest wind less than 4 metres per second). Low probability of harmful macroalgal or phytoplankton blooms. Stormwater from the town centre is discharged approximately 100 metres southeast of the beach.
