Scario is a sandy bathing water area located on a high, jagged coastline with sandy beaches and breakwater cliffs in the municipality of San Giovanni a Piro, Salerno Province, Campania. The area has moderate urbanization and includes the Scario port to the north. The bathing water has been classified as Excellent for the years 2020–2023.

Location

San Giovanni a Piro, Salerno Province, Campania. The municipality is located at Via Roma, 56, CAP 84070, San Giovanni a Piro (Sa). The bathing area is situated north of the Scario port.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2020–2023). Monitoring is conducted by ARPAC, Dipartimento Provinciale di Salerno. Identified pollution sources include: three urban wastewater treatment plants (two biological treatment systems with active sludge in Lupinata and Capoluogo localities; one sedimentation tank with untreated discharge via submarine conduit at Scario); the Scario port structure; the mouth of the San Luca ravine; and potential breaks in the submarine conduit.

Risks

Possible pollution causes identified: presence of the Scario port mole structure on the western side near the sampling point; the mouth of the San Luca ravine at the sampling point; untreated urban wastewater sedimentation tank; and potential ruptures of the submarine discharge conduit serving the sedimentation tank.
