The Scharmützelsee, known as Brandenburg's sea, is the largest natural lake in Brandenburg with a surface area of 1210 hectares. Located approximately 25 km from the south-eastern border of Berlin in the Saarow Hills, the lake is approximately 10 km long and 1.2 km wide with a maximum depth of 31.3 metres. The bathing area at Bad Saarow, Cecilienpark is a popular tourist destination that has recovered significantly from past eutrophication through improved wastewater treatment. The lake supports intensive recreational use including swimming, fishing, sailing, and diving.
