The Scharmützelsee, known as the Märkisches Meer, is Brandenburg's largest naturally formed lake with a surface area of 1210 hectares. Located approximately 25 km southeast of Berlin's city boundary in the Saarow hill country, the lake is roughly 10 km long and 1.2 km wide with a maximum depth of 31.3 m. The bathing site Bad Saarow, Strandbad Mitte is located at the northern end of the lake and is intensively used for tourism including swimming, fishing, sailing, and diving. Water quality has improved significantly following wastewater treatment improvements, with visibility increasing to approximately 2.2 m during summer months.
