Scharmuetzelsee Wendisch Rietz Cp Schwarzhorn

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

The Scharmützelsee, known as Brandenburg's sea, is the largest natural lake in Brandenburg with a surface area of 1210 hectares. Located approximately 25 kilometres from the south-eastern border of Berlin in the Saarow Hills, the lake formed as a ringed basin carved by glacial meltwater during the last ice age. The lake measures approximately 10 kilometres in length and 1.2 kilometres in width, with a maximum depth of 31.3 metres. Historically over-enriched with nutrients from inadequate wastewater treatment and agricultural fertilisers, the lake has recovered significantly through improved waste management, with summer water transparency now around 2 metres. The bathing site is intensively used for tourism, including swimming, angling, sailing, and diving.
