The Scharmützelsee, Brandenburg's largest natural lake, covers 1210 hectares and is situated approximately 25 kilometres south-east of Berlin in the Saarow Hills. The lake is roughly 10 kilometres long and 1.2 kilometres wide, with a maximum depth of 31.3 metres. It formed during the last ice age when glacial meltwater carved a channel-shaped basin. The lake is fed primarily by groundwater, with surface inflows from the Glubig-Melange stream in the south and the Storkower Canal serving as the outflow. The bathing site at Diensdorf has achieved an excellent water quality classification across multiple assessment periods from 2016 to 2024.
