Scharmuetzelsee Wendisch Rietz Ferienpark

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Scharmützelsee, known as the Märkische Meer, is Brandenburg's largest natural lake with a surface area of 1210 hectares, located approximately 25 km from Berlin's south-eastern border in the Saarow Hills. The lake measures about 10 km in length and 1.2 km in width, with a maximum depth of 31.3 m. It has recovered significantly from historical eutrophication caused by inadequate wastewater treatment and agricultural runoff, with water clarity now averaging 2 m during summer months. The lake is intensively used for tourism and recreation including swimming, fishing, sailing, and diving. More than 80% of the shoreline is developed.
