Seebad Haltern is an artificial bathing water in a reservoir (Talsperre) located in lowland terrain at an elevation below 200 metres. The bathing area covers 800 metres of shoreline within a 10-hectare water body. Water temperature ranges from 15.3 to 21.9 degrees Celsius, with a mean of 18.6 degrees. The water is classified as eutropic with a water exchange time exceeding 30 days. The bathing area has been designated as an EU bathing water since at least 1992.

Water

Artificial reservoir (Talsperre) with a surface area of 10 hectares. Mean depth is 3 metres, maximum depth is 6 metres. Water level fluctuates between 0.5 and 1.5 metres. The catchment area ranges from 100 to 1000 square kilometres. Substrate composition is sandy and silty. The water body is stratified. Water exchange time exceeds 30 days.

Water Quality

Water quality rated as excellent for 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. pH ranges from 7.95 to 8.63 (mean 8.29). Conductivity ranges from 462 to 560 µS/cm (mean 511). Water transparency ranges from 1 to 7.9 metres (mean 1.45 metres). The water is eutropic. No cyanobacterial blooms have been recorded in the past four years, though limited cyanobacterial formation in shallow water zones may occur during hot summer months, with the last occurrence approximately 5–6 years prior. No microbiological or chemical contamination of sediments has been detected.

Risks

Strong bird loading from high cormorant populations. Cyanobacterial risk is assessed as low, though temporal limitation to shallow water zones is possible during hot summer months. Contamination sources outside the local district (from Coesfeld district via the Stever tributary) cannot be excluded.
