Snaptun - Sydstrand

Snaptun Sydstrand is a small town beach located south of the harbour in Snaptun by, in Hedensted Municipality on the Danish east coast at the outlet to Horsens Fjord. The beach is approximately 100 metres long with a sand beach 3–5 metres wide. It is bordered by the harbour to the north and coastal protection structures to the south. The area is characterised by many summer houses.

Water

Horsens Fjord is a medium-sized fjord with a surface area of 77.5 km² and water volume of 0.132 km³. Water depth at the bathing site is 2 metres extending to approximately 30 metres from the shore. Hjarnø Strait is 19 metres deep at approximately 300 metres from the coast. The fjord has a sandy bottom at the bathing site with shallow water. Summer water temperature ranges from 14–21 degrees Celsius. Salinity is 18–20 psu. Mean water residence time in the fjord during summer is approximately 18 days.

Location

Snaptun by, Hedensted Municipality, Danish east coast. The beach is situated south of the harbour. Parking available with designated handicap parking.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent, the best classification a bathing site can have, based on data from the last 4 years of bathing water analyses. The classification system includes four categories: excellent, good, satisfactory, and poor.

Risks

Risk of algal blooms when abundant light, nutrients and warmth are present, particularly during calm weather periods. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) from the central Baltic Sea spreading to the site during warm, sunny, calm periods with easterly winds. Risk of kelp and macroalgae washing ashore during strong winds and onshore winds, creating aesthetic problems and potential oxygen depletion from decomposition. Stormwater discharge occurs south of the bathing site but is not assessed as posing real risk of short-term faecal contamination.
