Sønderby Strand

Sønderby Strand is a bathing beach located at the bottom of As Vig in Hedensted Municipality on Denmark's east coast. The beach features a 5–10 metre wide sandy strand with a small grass rest area. The seabed consists of sand with shallow water extending to the first reef. Water temperature in summer ranges from 14–21 degrees Celsius.

Water

Coastal water body in As Vig on Denmark's east coast. As Vig is approximately 2.5 kilometres wide. Water depth reaches 12 metres at its deepest point. At bathing areas, depth is 2 metres between 50–100 metres from the shore. Salinity ranges from 16–24 psu. Four minor streams and two larger watercourses (Ringstholm Å and Skjold Å) feed into As Vig.

Location

Sønderby Strand is situated at the bottom of As Vig near the summer cottage area of Sønderby in Hedensted Municipality, between Horsens and Juelsminde. Access is via gravel road from the main road. Only private parking is available. A shop is located 2,000 metres from the beach.

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms during warm, sunny, and calm periods, particularly when easterly winds transport algae from the Baltic Sea along the east Jutland coast. Algal blooms are most likely to occur in July and August. Agricultural nutrient runoff and fish farming contributions to nutrient loading can indirectly support algal growth.
