Søby Strand

Søby Strand is a bathing beach located on the eastern side of Søby Harbour in Søby, Denmark. The beach consists of fine sand with small and medium-sized stones, measures 10–30 metres wide and approximately 200 metres long, and features a bathing pier. The water is classified as salt water in the Fynen Archipelago with tidal current shifts occurring approximately every 12 hours.

Location

Søby is a small town with approximately 550 inhabitants on the island of Ærø. The beach is accessed via Søby Harbour on the eastern side of the town. Water depth under 2 metres extends approximately 150 metres from the coast.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent (Udmærket), the highest classification possible. Classification is based on data from 2019–2023. Monitoring measures enterococci and E. coli levels; Excellent quality requires enterococci ≤100 per 100 ml and E. coli ≤250 per 100 ml (based on 95-percentile values).

Risks

Potential fecal pollution from four combined sewer overflow structures in Søby Harbour during heavy rainfall, though currently no documented impact on bathing water quality. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up at the water's edge; the municipality regularly removes washed-up seaweed during bathing season. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms. Occasional glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
