Vestre Strand

Vestre Strand is a fine sand beach with small stones located near Ærøskøbing on the island of Ærø, Denmark. The beach is 15–20 metres wide and 500 metres long, situated approximately 300 metres from Ærøskøbing town. It faces Revkrog and features private bathing huts along its length. The seabed consists of sand with small to medium stones for the first 2–3 metres, then transitions to fine sand. A bathing pier extends over the stones in the southern part of the beach.

Water

Salt water in the Fynske Øhav (The Funen Archipelago). Water depth is less than 2 metres for approximately 170 metres from the coast. Current direction changes approximately every 12 hours with tidal movement.

Location

The beach is located approximately 300 metres from Ærøskøbing, accessed via Sygehusvej from the town. A car park with bins is situated across from the beach to the east. Public toilet facilities and information boards are located south of the car park, with an additional toilet building north of the car park that includes disabled access and a ramp for wheelchair users.

Season

Bathing season is referenced; Ærø Municipality removes seaweed regularly during this period. Water quality classification is revised annually in May.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent based on data from 2019–2023. Classification is determined by E. coli and enterococci counts per 100 ml according to Danish regulations. No sources of faecal pollution have been registered at this bathing water site.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up at the water's edge; Ærø Municipality removes seaweed regularly during the bathing season. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur. Sudden pollution may arise from boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewer lines.
