Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Bathing water profiles are mandatory assessments for all EU bathing beaches, describing physical characteristics, geographical and hydrological properties, identified pollution sources, and health risks. Svendborg Municipality has developed profiles for 16 bathing beaches. Water quality monitoring occurs at regular intervals during the bathing season (June to September), with samples analysed for faecal bacteria including E. coli and Enterococci. Warnings of health risks are communicated through signage at beaches and online.

Water

Saltwater classified as Det Sydfynske Øhav (South Funen Archipelago). Tidal variation is less than 0.5 metres. Water depth at monitoring stations ranges from less than 2 metres to 50–100 metres depending on the beach. Current direction varies with wind conditions but predominantly flows from southwest to south-southwest.

Location

Svendborg Municipality, Denmark. Ballen Strand is located at Ballen Harbour with open grassland parking adjacent to the beach. Christiansminde Strand is in southeastern Svendborg facing Svendborg Sound, with parking, facilities, and accessibility for wheelchairs.

Facilities

Lifeguards present June 15 to August 15 (Christiansminde). Bathing platforms available. Parking with disabled access. Toilets including accessible facilities. Bus access. Showers. Restaurants and kiosks at some beaches. Blue Flag designation at certain beaches.

Season

Monitoring season: June to September. Lifeguards operate approximately June 15 to August 15.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is 'Excellent' (2012–2015 data). Microbiological standards: Excellent requires Enterococcci ≤100 CFU/100ml and E. coli ≤250 CFU/100ml (based on 95th percentile). Risk of short-term faecal contamination from known sources such as stream outflows, accidental discharges from boats, or septic tanks. Low risk of cyanobacteria blooms based on 2012–2015 measurements.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation at waterline; contact with decaying seaweed may produce toxins and harbour disease-causing bacteria. Cyanobacteria blooms can occur during prolonged warm periods with high nutrient concentrations, causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Algal toxins are particularly dangerous for children and immunocompromised individuals. Glass, litter, and chemical contamination including oil spills may occur. Storm sewage overflow possible at some locations.
