Varigotti Beach is a mixed sandy and pebbly beach located in the Finale Ligure municipality in Liguria, Italy. The beach is situated in a residential zone west of Punta Crena and is part of the Ceriale-Finale water body in a coastal area classified as having low stability and mountainous relief. The beach offers private bathing establishments with services, dining facilities, and accommodation structures. The water quality classification for the 2019–2022 period is Excellent.

Coastal water body type classified as low-stability mountainous relief. The water body is part of the Ceriale-Finale system and is bounded by the Armareo River basin.

Location

Varigotti Beach is located in Finale Ligure, Savona Province, Liguria region, situated west of Punta Crena. A seaside promenade and the SS1 road are located uphill from the beach. The beach area extends 1.447 km.

Private bathing establishments with services, dining facilities, and accommodation structures. Animal access is permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on 2019–2022 monitoring period). The Ligurian Sea does not show cyanobacterial blooms due to oligotrophic conditions. The bathing water falls within Area 4 of the regional Ostreopsis monitoring network. Reference station MCAD at Pietra Ligure recorded values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2021, August 2022, and July 2023, with no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre threshold during 2019–2023.

Risks

A sewage discharge pipe located approximately 800 metres to the east of the monitoring station discharges offshore at approximately 566 metres from the shoreline. The Armareo River mouth directly overlies the bathing water. Heavy rainfall upstream may increase river discharge, potentially transporting effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has been documented in the region over the past decade, causing temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
