Identified sources of pollution include two treatment plants: depurator at c.da Imperio (biodiscs system, WGS84 37.8156 N, 15.2468 E) with discharge into Fiume Alcantara; depurator at Pasteria (active sludge recycling, WGS84 37.803232 N, 15.231072 E). Additional pollution sources include discharges from other municipalities on Fiume Alcantara and adjacent coastal areas.

Risks

Bathing prohibitions have been issued in the area: at the mouth of Torrente Minissale between the southern point of the north bathing area (15.2448 E–37.7961 N) and the northern point of the south area (15.2443 E–37.7956 N); between the northern boundary of Catania province (37.8070 N, 15.2577 E) and the southern point of Fiume Alcantara (37.8026 N, 15.2520 E).
