Coastal bathing water located on a beach with restricted use associated with sensitive natural systems. The beach features golden sand with cliffs and highly sculpted rock formations. A small carved promontory forms a boundary to the beach. The beach extends 245 metres along the coast with a tidal range of 3.4 metres and mean wave height of 0.5 metres. Winds predominantly blow from the northwest.

Location

Portimão municipality, Algarve, Portugal. Monitoring point coordinates: 37.1176° N, 8.5483° W (ETRS 89).

Season

June 1 to September 30, 2023. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification in 2022 complied with Decreto-Lei 135/09. Microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures or during heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off and overflows. No days of bathing advice against or prohibition due to short-term pollution events were recorded in the 2022 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution lasting less than 72 hours is scarce but possible due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures or intense precipitation causing surface drainage and overflows. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is uncommon. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
