Artificial lake with an area of 87.6 hectares. Average depth 4.9 metres, maximum depth 13.4 metres. Water temperature ranges from 10.8 °C to 22.4 °C (mean 19.2 °C). pH ranges from 6.5 to 7.9 (mean 7.3). Conductivity ranges from 369 to 455 µS/cm (mean 411 µS/cm). Water transparency 2.5 metres. Classified as mesotrophic. Fed by groundwater with water exchange time exceeding 30 days. Water level fluctuations of 1.5 metres. Substrate is sandy and silty.

Düsseldorf, Germany. The bathing area is located at UTM coordinates E: 352644 N: 5673856. The site is managed by Zweckverband Unterbacher See, Kleiner Torfbruch 31, 40608 Düsseldorf.

Water Quality

Rated 'excellent' for all years 2020–2023. No relevant pollution sources identified. No municipal, industrial, or household treatment plants discharge into the lake. No contamination in sediments detected.

Risks

Occasional presence of cercariae (duck flea) causing bathing dermatitis with low to moderate complaint frequency. Cyanobacterial bloom caused closure of the north beach from 29 July to 9 August 2018; enhanced monitoring of cyanobacteria is planned. High waterfowl populations occasionally cause goose faeces contamination of lawns and paths, removed daily as needed.
