Valle di Montirozzo is a pebble beach in Ancona, Marche region, protected by natural submerged limestone cliffs. The beach spans 1,500 m in length and 30 m in width, with an average slope of 5% on the emerged beach and 8% on the submerged beach. The surrounding area consists of high Mediterranean scrub vegetation. The distance between mean low and high water is 5 m, with an astronomical tidal range of 30–50 cm.

Water Quality

Classification: E (as of the profile date). The treatment wastewater network serves the municipalities of Camerano and southern Ancona districts, with a biological treatment plant with active sludge located in Camerano. The plant has a capacity of 7,032 m³/day or 32,000 equivalent inhabitants. Monthly ARPAM controls conducted in 2010 showed Escherichia coli levels ranging from below the detection limit to 4,800 UFC/100 ml, with conformity to authorized limits.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation identified. Toxic algal bloom of Ostreopsis ovata occurred in September 2008, causing death of sessile benthic organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels) but no effects on people. In 2007, 2009, and 2010, algal blooms typical of the coast were absent.
