Varna Central Beach is a 1000-metre sandy beach strip with fine-grained sand of varying width located in the city of Varna in northeastern Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast. The beach is situated in a heavily urbanized area and is subject to both abrasion and accumulation processes that influence its characteristics. The beach receives approximately 500–600 visitors and is managed by the private operator "LAZUREN BRYAG 91" EOOD.

Water

Sea water body. Part of the Varna Bay (Water Body ID: BG2BS000C005) in the Black Sea Basin. The area is influenced by the Danube River and its freshwater discharge. Coastal zone characterized by erosion and accumulation processes, with a steeply sloping rocky shore to the east subject to significant landslide and abrasion activity.

Location

Varna, northeastern Bulgaria. The beach is accessible by personal and public transport in the Varna city area along the coastal line.

Facilities

Two lifeguard stations, toilets, showers, changing rooms, one medical station, and accessible facilities for people with disabilities.

Water Quality

Water quality classification from 2007–2021: 2007 poor; 2008–2014 good or sufficient (with 2013 rated excellent); 2015 poor; 2016–2018 sufficient; 2019–2021 good. Potential pollution sources include streams (deretata) flowing through Varna territory carrying waste, petroleum products, and suspended solids; overflow from the city sewerage system near the breakwater of the Marine Station; the Shokarov Canal; and maritime traffic. Treated wastewater from Asparagovo treatment plant is now transferred to Varna treatment plant via a 2.5 km pressure pipeline under the lake rather than discharged locally.

Risks

Streams (deretata) that flow through Varna territory are potential sources of pollution with waste, petroleum products, and suspended solids. Marine traffic is a source of pollution with petroleum products and general extractable substances. Stagnant water zones may accumulate pollutants near the breakwater.
