Vilkokšnio Lake is a bathing area located in Trakai Municipality in the Vilnius district of Lithuania. The beach is 250 metres long with sand composition and natural shoreline vegetation including trees, reeds, sedges, and other plants typical of lake ecosystems. The water depth averages 1.5 metres and reaches a maximum of 2.5 metres. The bathing area can accommodate approximately 400 visitors during peak season under favorable weather conditions.

Water

Vilkokšnio Lake is a shallow freshwater lake. Average water depth is 1.5 metres; maximum depth is 2.5 metres and gradually increases. Beach length is 250 metres. Three streams flow into the lake: Koja, Verkne, and Same rivers. The lake is located in the Nemunas river basin district (basin code LT11) and is classified as Type 2 water body.

Location

Vilkokšnio Lake is located in Trakai Municipality, in the Grendavės seniority administrative unit within the Vilnius district. The nearest residential dwelling is 500 metres away. Parking is available with an automobile parking area at the beach.

Facilities

Two bio-toilets and two changing cabins are available. An information board displays water quality test results. Waste management includes rubbish bins and domestic waste collection containers. Pets are permitted on the beach but are not allowed to swim.

Water Quality

Water quality has been classified as excellent from 2018 to 2024 in compliance with the 2006/7/EB directive requirements. The lake meets good ecological status requirements and is not classified as a problematic or critical water body. Phosphorus and nitrogen levels were not tested; visual monitoring of cyanobacteria was conducted instead. No research on cyanobacteria, large algae, or marine phytoplankton proliferation was undertaken.

Risks

Short-term pollution is possible during heavy rainfall; pollution typically disappears within 1–2 days after rainfall ceases. Surface rainwater runoff during adverse weather conditions, such as heavy storms, may affect bathing water quality. The Same stream, which flows into the lake, has a wastewater discharge outlet for domestic and industrial effluent.
