Wankumer Heidesee is an artificial lake bathing beach located in the lowlands of North Rhine-Westphalia. The bathing area covers 700 metres of shoreline on a 12-hectare section of a larger 26-hectare lake. The lake has a sandy to gravelly substrate with an average depth of 7 metres and a maximum depth of 13 metres. Water temperatures range from 15.3 to 23.5 degrees Celsius, with average transparency of 4.2 metres.

Location

Wachtendonk, North Rhine-Westphalia. The bathing area is operated by Freizeitanlage Wankumer Heide GmbH, located at Am Heidesee 5, 47669 Wachtendonk.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent in all four years from 2015 to 2018. The lake is mesotrophic with a natural nutrient content of 2. No water blooms from cyanobacteria observed in the past four years. Risk of future cyanobacterial mass development assessed as low. Macroalgae previously unproblematic; blue algae mentioned in a technical article from 2003–2004 but not subsequently observed. Risk of future phytoplankton mass development assessed as low.

Risks

Temporary contamination from cercariae due to elevated waterfowl presence is possible. Grey geese rest on the shore but are regularly dispersed during the bathing season. Condense water discharge from a lime-sand brick production facility approximately 600 metres away; no negative effects observed to date. Water-skiing facility present with no relevant impact on bathing water quality.
