Werbellinsee is one of Brandenburg's largest and deepest lakes, located approximately 50 km north of Berlin in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Schorfheide-Chorin. With a maximum depth of 55 metres and a surface area of 795 hectares, it is a long, wide basin oriented north-south, formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age. The lake receives inflow from the nutrient-rich Grimnitzsee to the north and drains southward via the Werbellin and Finow canals into the Oder-Havel Canal. Its deep water column, low water exchange rate of 33 years, and small forested catchment area naturally support clear, nutrient-poor conditions.
