A sandy beach with fine sand and a 3% average slope, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The beach extends approximately 80 metres between mean low water and high water (safe water limit). Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is densely urbanised with a railway line passing through it. Average beach width is 50 metres.

Coastal bathing water body (Civitanova_Porto San Giorgio) in the Fosso Valloscura-Rio Petronilla catchment area. Area of 0.11353 hectares.

Location

Porto San Giorgio, Fermo Province, Marche Region, Italy. First aid station located approximately 1,700 metres south. Municipal office and port authority located 1,700 metres south. Information point via loudspeaker 1,850 metres south.

Facilities

Lifeguard towers present. Concession chalets with bar or catering services available. Disabled access services. First aid service located 1,700 metres south. Defibrillators present at chalets. Dogs allowed only at participating concession areas.

Water Quality

2015: Excellent classification (E. coli 95th percentile 40.9 CFU/100 ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 61.4 CFU/100 ml). 2016: Excellent classification (E. coli 95th percentile 70.8 CFU/100 ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 94.6 CFU/100 ml). 2017: Good classification (E. coli 95th percentile 131.6 CFU/100 ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 115.1 CFU/100 ml). 2018: Sufficient classification (E. coli 90th percentile 152.1 CFU/100 ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 110.8 CFU/100 ml). Treated wastewater from a biological activated sludge treatment plant with design capacity of 40,000 person equivalents is discharged via Lido di Fermo treatment plant into Fosso Vallescura. Seven overflow structures in the sewer network discharge untreated urban wastewater into the water body.

Risks

Algal blooms and phytoplankton present due to nutrient input from Fosso Rio Vallescura. Skeletonema costatum (non-toxic alga) bloom recorded on 31 January 2009 at 1,390,000 cells/litre. Treatment plant malfunctions and heavy rainfall cause short-duration pollution events. Contamination event of extended duration recorded in 2018.
