A fine sand beach in Porto San Giorgio with an average slope of 3% on both emerged and submerged sections, protected by artificial rock outcrops. The beach has a width of 80 metres and is bordered by urban development including a railway line. The distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres.

Classification: Excellent (2015, 2016, 2017); Sufficient (2018). 2015 — E. coli 95th percentile 18.6 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 17.4 CFU/100ml. 2016 — E. coli 95th percentile 79.2 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 65.9 CFU/100ml. 2017 — E. coli 95th percentile 217.6 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 98.1 CFU/100ml. 2018 — E. coli 90th percentile 266.2 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 90th percentile 107.3 CFU/100ml. Pollution sources include wastewater discharge from Rio Valloscura stream receiving urban effluent from 41 sewer overflow points and treated wastewater from Lido di Fermo treatment plant. Accidental failures and overflow events recorded.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events generated following heavy rainfall. Rio Valloscura stream discharge receiving partially treated urban wastewater. Algal blooms: Skeletonema costatum (non-toxic) recorded 31 January 2009 at 1,390,000 cells/litre. Anomalous contamination events recorded in 2016 and 2018. Accidental failures and sewer overflows.
