A fine sand beach with a gentle slope of 3% on both emerged and submerged areas, protected by artificial rock barriers. The beach is approximately 30 metres wide. The water distance between mean low and high tide (safe water limit) is about 80 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is an urban settlement with a railway line passing through.

Location

Fermo, Marche region, Italy. Located 150 metres north of the Rio Valloscura stream outlet. The nearest town is Fermo in Fermo Province.

Facilities

Beach establishment with refreshment point and sanitary facilities. Information points with public address system. Observation tower for sea rescue. Dog access permitted in bathing concessions under municipal regulation.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2015–2018). 2015: E. coli 95th percentile 18.3 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 26.1 CFU/100ml. 2016: E. coli 78.4, enterococci 66.9. 2017: E. coli 167.7, enterococci 82.9. 2018: E. coli 194.9, enterococci 89.3. Wastewater treatment plant located at San Michele, Lido di Fermo, serving much of Fermo city, with biological treatment and activated sludge system rated for 50,000 population equivalents. COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters were compliant in 2011–2014; microbiological controls were compliant in those years.

Risks

Potential for macroalgae banks and phytoplankton proliferation from nutrient inputs via Rio Valloscura stream. A non-toxic diatom bloom (Chaetoceros spp) at 1,447,000 cells/litre was detected in a surveillance sample on 14 May 2013 with no reported health risk. Accidental failures and combined sewer overflow events at the wastewater treatment plant and seven overflows at Rio Valloscura stream during heavy rainfall. Short-duration pollution events possible.
