A pebble beach located 150 metres north of the Tesino river mouth in Grottammare, Marche region. The beach has a medium slope of 5% on both the emerged and submerged sections and is protected by artificial rock breakwaters. The distance between medium-low and high water levels is approximately 80 metres. The surrounding area is densely urbanized with a railway line passing through.

Marine water body (Porto San Giorgio_Grottammare). Mean beach width of 20 metres. Astronomical tide range of 30 to 50 centimetres.

Facilities

Beach establishment with food and beverage point and toilet facilities. Animals are permitted on the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification E. The area is served by a mixed public sewer system connected to a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 35,000 equivalent inhabitants. The treatment plant demonstrated good efficiency in 2006 and 2007, with COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters consistently compliant. Microbiological controls in 2008, 2009, and 2010 were compliant. A microalgae bloom of Skeletonema costatum was recorded in February 2009 at 2,629,000 cells/litre at the 150m south of Tesino mouth station, with no health risk reports.

Risks

Potential presence of macroalgae banks and phytoplankton proliferation due to possible nutrient input from the Tesino stream. Short-duration pollution events from accidental failures, overflow, pumping stations, and treatment plant discharge.
