A fine sandy beach with a medium slope of 3% extending both above and below water level, protected by artificial rock barriers. The beach is approximately 80 metres wide between mean low and high water. The surrounding area is densely urbanised with a railway line passing through. Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimetres.

Coastal bathing water at the mouth of the Tesino river, part of the Grottammare_San Benedetto water body. Monitoring area covers 0.07174 km².

Beach establishment with refreshment point and sanitary facilities. Animals permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category E. Wastewater treatment via municipal mixed sewerage system connected to a biological treatment plant (active sludge) with capacity for 35,000 population equivalents, located at C.da S. Leonardo and discharging into the Tesino river. Treatment plant parameters COD, BOD5, and suspended solids were compliant in 2006–2007. Microbiological controls in 2008–2010 were compliant. E. coli monitoring conducted at the river mouth.

Risks

Potential for macroalgae banks and phytoplankton proliferation from nutrient inputs from the Tesino torrent. Microalgal bloom of Skeletonema costatum detected in February 2009 at 2,629,000 cells/litre. Short-duration pollution events possible from accidental failures, combined sewer overflows, and treatment plant malfunctions. No cyanobacterial proliferation reported in the preceding four years.
