A sandy beach located 150 metres north of the Fano railway underpass at Gimarra. The beach has fine quartz, feldspar, and calcareous sand with a gentle slope of 1-3%. It is protected by submerged artificial rock barriers. The beach is 36 metres wide on average and is situated in an urbanized area with railway infrastructure nearby.

Water

Coastal marine water body (Pesaro_Fano). Average distance between water level at mid-low and high tide (safe water limit) is 80 metres. Tidal range is 30-50 centimetres. Area: 1.49148 square kilometres.

Location

Fano, Pesaro Urbino province, Marche region, Italy. The beach is accessible via a cycling path.

Disabled toilet facilities; accessible path to the sea; lifeguard and rescue service; sports facilities (beach volleyball); children's play area; refreshment point; boat mooring with launch corridor; 3 licensed beach concessions; 3 free beach areas. No animals permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category E. A slight increase in microbiological parameters has been observed. The area is served by three wastewater treatment plants (Ponte Metauro, Bellocchi, and Ponte Sasso) operated with activated sludge systems. Overflow discharges occur during heavy rainfall events; 7 overflow structures discharge from Ponte Metauro and 10 from Ponte Sasso. Both Ponte Metauro and Ponte Sasso treatment plants comply with EU Directive 91/271/EC standards. Non-toxic microalgae blooms (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred in the 2008 and 2009 bathing seasons, causing unusual discoloration of seawater.

Risks

Overflow discharges from the combined sewer system during heavy rainfall events. Non-toxic microalgal blooms have been recorded.
