Beach with fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous-siliceous sand, with average slope of 1-3% on both emerged and submerged portions, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The distance between average-low and high water marks (safe water limit) is 80 metres. Astronomical tidal range is 30-50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Location

Fano, Pesaro Urbino province, Marche region, Italy. Located 100 metres south of Molo Arzilla. Parking available for disabled visitors with accessible pathway from parking to beach.

Three licensed beach areas. Lifeguard and first aid service. Accessible facilities for disabled visitors including reserved parking, accessible pathway to sea, and disabled toilets. Boat storage area with launch corridor. Sports facilities including beach volleyball. Children's play area. Food service point. Limited traffic zone.

Water Quality

Classification E. Monitoring period: 24 controls per year of parameters from Decree 152/2006 Annex V Table 1, and 6 controls per year of Table 3 parameters, all compliant with legal limits. Minor increase in microbiological parameters caused by urban wastewater. Blooms of non-toxic microalgae (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred during 2008 and 2009 bathing seasons, causing unusual water discolouration. Arzilla stream mouth present with discharge basin of 106.9 square kilometres and flow rate of 595 cubic metres per second. Three discharges with equivalent inhabitants <50, two storm overflows from Ponte Metauro treatment plant, four untreated discharges, and ten storm overflows from Albani canal (port canal).

Risks

Storm sewer overflows during intense rainfall events. Arzilla stream mouth and Albani canal discharges as sources of pollution. Non-toxic microalgae blooms (Noctiluca scintillans) documented in 2008 and 2009.
