Hornbæk Strand Øst is a sand beach located east of Hornbæk Harbour in Copenhagen, Denmark. The beach extends approximately 450 metres in length with a width of 50 to 80 metres. The water quality is classified as excellent based on measurements from the four most recent seasons. The beach is monitored at station 275 with ten samples collected in 2024. Brakich water conditions prevail, with a salinity of 1.8 to 2.3 percent.

Water

Sand beach with sandy bottom. The water reaches approximately 2 metres depth about 100 metres from the shore. Some reef formation is present. Wave heights can be high in areas without shelter from the harbour. The dominant current direction flows from west to east.

Location

East of Hornbæk Harbour in Hornbæk, Copenhagen (DK-2450 København SV). Parking is available at a lot east of Nordkystens Renseanlæg. Public transport includes the local railway (Lokalbanen) to Hornbæk and Bus 342.

Facilities

Lifeguards available in limited periods from 10:00 to 18:00; extended lifeguard service from 15 July to 4 August (10:00 to 18:00). First aid equipment (08:00 to 20:00). Toilets (08:00 to 20:00). Handicap toilet (08:00 to 20:00). Handicap facilities. Drinking water (08:00 to 20:00). Toilet with time lock at the treatment plant. Litter bins. Waste separation facilities. Dogs not allowed from 1 June to 15 September. Off-leash dogs allowed from 1 October to 31 March. No emergency phone; mobile signal available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent. Monitoring conducted at station 275 with 10 samples in 2024, based on results from the four most recent seasons. During heavy rainfall, there is a risk of sewer overflow from Østerbæk causing short-term water contamination lasting up to 2 days after the event. Nordkystens Renseanlæg discharges treated wastewater 500 metres from the shore; during heavy rain, wastewater discharge can occur 250 metres from the shore but will only in rare cases affect bathing water. Cyanobacteria blooms can occur rarely in sheltered areas of the harbour. Macroalgae belts with seaweed are present. Risk of phytoplankton blooms exists only in sheltered harbour areas.
