A pebble beach located 800 m north of the Sangro River mouth in Fossacesia, Abruzzo. The beach is approximately 32 m wide and experiences around 2,000 visitors over a 2-month period. The area is classified as coastal water with medium stability. The bathing water has been classified as EXCELLENT quality.

Coastal marine water. Beach area extends 0.620 km. The beach is pebble-based.

Location

Fossacesia, Chieti province, Abruzzo region. The beach is situated 800 m north of the Sangro River estuary. Public parking and promenades are available in the area.

Facilities

Umbrellas, public parking, promenade. Animals are prohibited by regional regulation.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: EXCELLENT. The Sangro River mouth is identified as a source of pollution impact. A pumping station upstream of the beach area conveys sewage from Marina di Fossacesia to a treatment plant located upstream of the SS 16 Adriatica road. No special measures or specific monitoring are currently active.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events are under study using appropriate modelling approaches. No anomalous events have been recorded. Cyanobacterial blooms have not been observed in the marine waters of the Abruzzo area. Sparse algal blooms occur in summer; dinoflagellate blooms with little or no toxic species have been recorded in previous years.
