This bathing area is located 75 metres south of Fossacesia train station in the Abruzzo region. The beach consists predominantly of pebbles with only minimal sand. The surrounding area contains numerous residential settlements and some hospitality facilities. A small watercourse named Fosso San Giovanni is present in the area. The water body extends approximately 1.4 km and has a beach width of about 30 metres.

Location

Fossacesia, Chieti Province, Abruzzo region. Located 75 metres south of Fossacesia train station (Stazione FS Fossacesia M.). Public parking is available.

Facilities

Hotels, beach establishments, beach umbrellas, shops, public parking, walkways along the sea. Animals are prohibited by regional ordinance.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: EXCELLENT. No treatment plants, sea discharge pipes, or Imhoff tanks are present in the beach area. Wastewater from the Marina di Fossacesia urban nucleus is transported via lifting pumps upstream of the beach along the SS 16 Adriatica coastal road. River mouths have been identified as a source of pollution impact.

Risks

Microalgae proliferation events of dinoflagellates, specifically Ostreopsis ovata, have occurred. In 2018, starting in early September, bathing waters were affected by a significant bloom of Ostreopsis ovata reaching a maximum of 81,000 cells per litre. This microscopic alga can be toxic via inhalation, posing a health risk from aerosol inhalation when present on the beach. Some cases of respiratory difficulties and dyspnea have been reported. Beach erosion phenomena have been recorded despite protective works.
