Aborg Strand N

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Aborg Strand N is a shallow sandy beach approximately 220 metres long and 10 metres wide located in Lillebælt, about 3400 metres north of Assens in southern Denmark. The beach has an excellent water quality classification and is backed by agricultural land with small coastal wetland areas. Tables and benches are available at the beach, and parking is provided approximately 20 metres from the shore.

Water

Lillebælt in the western Baltic Sea. The beach is shallow and the seabed consists primarily of sand. Water salinity varies depending on current direction due to influence from both low-salinity Baltic water and higher-salinity Lillebælt water. Larger waves can occur.

Location

Located in Lillebælt approximately 3400 metres north of Assens, near the southern part of Bågø island. Parking is available about 20 metres from the beach. Information signs regarding bathing conditions and water quality are posted at the access road from the car park.

1 June to 1 September (official bathing season for monitoring purposes).

Water Quality

Water classification: Excellent (as of the latest 4-year assessment period). Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 1 September, with a minimum of 10 water samples collected throughout the bathing season. Analysis results are published on the municipality's website. Good or excellent water quality has been consistently achieved over the last 4 years based on faecal indicator bacteria measurements.

Risks

Potential faecal contamination from a combined sewer overflow (UAT02S) located approximately 1600 metres north, which can overflow during heavy prolonged rainfall and may affect water quality under unfavourable wind and current conditions. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can be transported to the area by water from the Baltic Sea, with highest risk during summer high-pressure periods with outflow from the Baltic. Blue-green algae blooms may occur following rainy periods with nutrient washout followed by warm conditions. Risk of other phytoplankton blooms is very low. Risk of large macroalgae wash-up is low.
