Sønder Åby Strand

Sønder Aaby is a 300-metre-long beach located on the south side of the Wedellsborg Peninsula in Lillebælt (Little Belt). The beach is approximately 5 metres wide, with sandy beach near the water's edge and stony beach further back. A variety of seaweed deposits wash up on the shore. The beach offers views of Bågø, Jutland, and Lillebælt, and visitors moving east can observe a natural geographical phenomenon: two sandspits that have grown toward each other over 75 years.

Water

Lillebælt (Little Belt) with shallow water. The seabed consists of sand and stone with minor filamentous algae growth on the stones. Salinity ranges from 16–20 PSU (practical salinity units), classified as brackish water. Local divers report relatively weak currents; monitoring in 2010 recorded no current in 3 of 5 samples and westward-flowing current in 2 samples.

Location

Sønder Aaby Strand is located in the southernmost part of Middelfart Municipality in Denmark. Access is via Høstmarksvej, which is the only vehicular access route. Parking, toilet facilities, and a beach volleyball court are available at the end of Høstmarksvej.

Facilities

Parking area, accessible toilet for disabled visitors, beach volleyball court, seating and picnic tables at the end of Høstmarksvej, bathing jetty, and pontoon bathing platform.

Season

Monitoring is conducted during the bathing season with at least 6 water samples collected.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as EXCELLENT based on enterococci and E. coli measurements over the past four years, in accordance with EU bathing water regulations. The beach is extremely rarely contaminated.

Risks

Low risk of cyanobacterial blooms; cyanobacteria primarily occur in the Baltic Sea and can only reach northern Lillebælt during prolonged easterly winds. No phytoplankton blooms have been observed in the past 5 years. Seaweed wash-up occurs regularly but poses minimal risk.
