Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

Kyvverniti Beach is a small sandy beach situated within a natural cove on a rocky substrate. The beach is 540 metres long with an average water depth of 1.5 metres and a maximum depth of 3 metres. Rocky formations appear at the northern and southern edges of the beach, with a purely rocky beach and steep cliff forming at the southern section. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status and is monitored for water quality under European bathing water standards.

Water

Coastal water body named Moni (CY_16-C2). Sandy substrate with rocky formations at the edges. Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds present in limited formations mainly in the outer part of the nearshore zone at greater depths. The water body is in good ecological condition.

Location

Located in the Limassol District, Pentakomo Community, Cyprus. The monitoring point is positioned at coordinates 33.2711°E, 34.7119°N (ETRS89), at the area where the largest concentration of bathers occurs.

Facilities

Lifeguards with rescue equipment available from 10:00 to 18:00 during bathing season. Toilets provided by recreational and catering facilities. Waste collection bins maintained by Pentakomo Community Council. Summer services include sun loungers and umbrellas. Blue Flag designation. No public facilities for general public use.

Season

Bathing season monitoring period. Lifeguard services operate during the designated swimming season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. The bathing water has been monitored for many years. Monitoring reports prepared under Directive 76/160/EEC since Cyprus's EU accession in 2004. Short-term pollution incidents recorded in 2009 attributed to weather conditions or passing ships. Risk of short-term pollution assessed as low. Risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication assessed as low.

Risks

Short-term pollution risk: Low. Possible sources include malfunction of wastewater treatment facilities at coastal developments, large industrial facilities, passing vessels, fish farms at minimum distance of 1.6 km away, and port installations. Fish farms and major port facilities with industries located to the northeast of the beach.
