Agios Georgios Alamanou is a pebble beach located in a natural bay on the island of Cyprus. The beach features dining and recreation facilities in the coastal zone with ornamental vegetation. The natural shoreline is covered with pebbles, and the beach is 240 metres long with an average water depth of 1 metre and maximum depth of 2.5 metres. The beach accommodates a maximum of 300 swimmers daily.

Natural coastal water body (Moni). Beach length: 240 metres. Average water depth: 1 metre. Maximum water depth: 2.5 metres. Pebble-covered seabed. Located in major hydrological basin 9 with mean elevation of 438.2 metres in the catchment area.

Location

Located in the Limassol district, within the Monagrollio community in Cyprus. The monitoring point is positioned where the largest volume of swimmers congregates.

Facilities

Toilets (served by the dining facilities establishment). Waste collection bins (maintenance responsibility held by Pentakomos Community Council). Seasonal summer services including sun loungers and umbrellas. No public facilities for general public use.

Season

Official monitoring programme established in 2008. Mean annual discharge in the catchment is highest in February and lowest in August. Southwestern winds predominate during the swimming season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since 2008. The coastal body of water maintains good ecological status. Moderate probability of macroalgae and phytoplankton development due to pollution sources in the terrestrial and marine influence zones.

Risks

Possible sources of short-term pollution include malfunction of sewage systems from coastal buildings and passing vessels. No short-term pollution incidents recorded during swimming seasons 2008-2010. Risk of short-term pollution is negligible. Possible sources of regular pollution include intensive agricultural runoff and infiltration, and septic tanks from coastal developments. Fish farming units and passing vessels are potential marine pollution sources. Moderate probability of macroalgae and phytoplankton development.
