Oikia GEEF is a small beach located north of Zygi fishing harbour in Cyprus. The beach is 280 metres long and composed of small to medium-sized pebbles with semi-rocky substrate. The shoreline is backed by a coastal road, with houses, tourist facilities, and agricultural land inland. Natural vegetation includes low shrubs, scrub, and scattered conifers, with a small park featuring eucalyptus trees and landscaping on the eastern section.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Beach length: 280 metres. Average water depth: 1 metre. Maximum water depth: 2 metres. Seabed composed of small to medium-sized pebbles with no submerged vegetation. Semi-natural shoreline with small stone deposits at two locations acting as rudimentary groyne structures.

Location

Zygi, Larnaca District, Cyprus. Located north of Zygi fishing harbour. A stream discharges approximately 400 metres to the northeast.

Facilities

Public beach management. Rubbish collection bins managed by Zygi Community Council. Public facilities available at an adjacent community park.

Season

Monitoring conducted during official bathing seasons. Data available for 2005–2010 and subsequent years.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal body to which this site belongs is in good ecological status. The site is not directly associated with an internal surface water body. Isolated pollution incidents were recorded during the 2005 and 2007 bathing seasons. The ephemeral macroalga Cladophora spp was observed during the 2005 and 2006 bathing seasons. A moderate degree of risk exists for the development of macroalgae and phytoplankton.

Risks

Ephemeral macroalga Cladophora spp observed in 2005 and 2006. Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development. Small risk of short-term pollution from passing vessels, fish farm units, and port facilities, occurring approximately once per bathing season and lasting 1–2 days. Potential pollution sources include septic tanks from Zygi and holiday homes lacking sewerage networks, agricultural runoff and seepage, Zygi fishing harbour, Vasiliko industrial port, passing vessels, and fish farm installations 4 kilometres to the southwest.
