The Altwarmbüchener See is part of a recreational area at the edge of the Altwarmbüchener Moor in the northeast of Hanover. Three-quarters of the lake lies within the city of Hanover, with the northern quarter in the municipality of Isernhagen, district of Altwarmbüchen. On the northern shore, two bathing areas feature long sandy beaches. The lake is surrounded by forests, meadows, and residential areas, and is fed by groundwater. Activities include swimming, sunbathing, sailing, windsurfing, hiking, and nature observation.
