Sonnensee is a groundwater-fed gravel pit lake located on the northeastern edge of Hannover in the Misburg district, surrounded by the Altwarmbüchener Moor / Ahltener Wald landscape protection area. The lake features sandy beaches in shallow water areas and a swimming stadium with jetty, along with various access points via natural entries, bathing stairs, and piers. It is integrated into a club-owned sports and leisure facility operated by the Bund für Familiensport und freie Lebensgestaltung e.V., which members can access.
