Amager Strandpark is a sandy beach with a sandy bottom facing the Øresund strait. The bathing water profile extends 4.6 km in length and reaches 400 m at its widest point. Water depth is approximately 1.5 m at 30 m from shore, increasing to 3–4 m beyond that distance. The lagoon reaches a maximum depth of 2 m. The beach remains open year-round, with lifeguards present during daytime hours in the summer season.

Water

Saltwater bathing area in the Øresund strait. The profile is 4.6 km long and 400 m wide at its widest point. Water depth is approximately 1.5 m at 30 m offshore and 3–4 m beyond 30 m. The lagoon has a maximum depth of 2 m. Water currents range from weak to strong, predominantly from northern and southern directions.

Location

Amager Strandpark, Copenhagen, Denmark. The northern section includes Helgoland Søbadeanstalt. The bathing area borders Tårnby Municipality on its southern part. Disabled parking is available at both beach section 1 and section 4.

Facilities

Lifeguards present during daytime hours in summer season. Helgoland Søbadeanstalt is accessible 24 hours daily during the summer season and staffed with lifeguards during daytime. Disabled access includes concrete pathways and ramps throughout the park, disabled toilets, disabled parking at beach sections 1 and 4, a disabled bathing lift, and a disabled bathing stairs at Helgoland Badeanstalt. Warning light system at the site alerts to poor bathing water quality. Online forecasting system and mobile application available.

Year-round access. Lifeguards present during daytime hours in the summer season. Helgoland Søbadeanstalt is accessible 24 hours daily throughout the summer season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2020–2023). Risk of cyanobacteria, phytoplankton growth, and macroalgae is assessed as low. Three treatment plants discharge treated wastewater at distances of 2, 3, and 4 km respectively. During periods of heavy rainfall, untreated wastewater discharge from treatment plants may occur, potentially contaminating bathing water with bacteria. The bathing area was closed for 86 hours (red flag) during the 2023 bathing season, representing 2.9% of the season.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria, phytoplankton growth, and macroalgae is low. During heavy rainfall, untreated wastewater discharge from treatment plants may occur. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills are occasional occurrences.
