Amager Strandpark is a sandy beach with a sandy bottom located along the Øresund strait, extending 4.6 km in length and 400 m at its widest point. The beach borders Tårnby Municipality on its southern section. Water depth reaches approximately 1.5 m at 30 m from shore, increasing to 3–4 m beyond that distance. A lagoon within the area has a maximum depth of 2 m. The beach is open year-round with lifeguard coverage during daytime hours in summer season.

Water

Saltwater beach with sandy bottom. Length 4.6 km, width up to 400 m. Water depth approximately 1.5 m at 30 m offshore, 3–4 m beyond. Lagoon maximum depth 2 m. Water currents weak to strong, predominantly from north and south directions.

Amager Strandpark, Copenhagen, Denmark, with the Helgoland bathing facility located at the northern end. Disabled parking available at beach sections 1 and 4.

Facilities

Lifeguards available during daytime hours in summer season. Helgoland bathing facility accessible 24 hours daily during summer season with daytime lifeguard coverage. Disabled facilities include concrete paths and ramps throughout the park, disabled toilets, disabled parking at beach sections 1 and 4, disabled bathing lift, and bathing steps at Helgoland facility. Online water quality warning system with on-site light indicator and mobile app available.

Bathing area open year-round. Lifeguard coverage available during daytime hours in summer season. Helgoland facility accessible 24 hours daily during summer season with daytime lifeguard coverage. Water quality monitoring conducted minimum 20 times per year.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent (Udmærket) in both monitoring points (DKBW 1526 and DKBW 1527) for years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Risk of cyanobacteria, phytoplankton growth, and macroalgae assessed as low. The bathing site was closed for 86 hours (red flag) during the 2023 swimming season, representing 2.9% of the season.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), phytoplankton growth, and macroalgae classified as low. Three wastewater treatment facilities (Tårnby Renseanlæg, Renseanlæg Damhusåen, and Renseanlæg Lynetten) located 2, 3, and 4 km away may discharge untreated wastewater during heavy rainfall, potentially contaminating bathing water with bacteria. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills occasionally occur.
