The Trois-Ilets municipality has a 18 km coastal area with sandy beaches, urbanised littoral, and mangrove. Six bathing zones are studied in this vulnerability profile: Méridien, Bakoua, Anse Mitan, and three areas at Anse à l'Ane. The study applies the 2006 European bathing water directive to improve water quality management and identify contamination sources.

Coastal bathing areas with sandy beaches. The municipality has an 18 km coastal shoreline. Three main hydrographic catchment basins serve the bathing zones: Pointe du Bout (Hôtels area), Anse Mitan, and Anse à l'Ane.

Location

Trois-Ilets commune, Martinique. Six bathing zones: Méridien, Bakoua (mid-beach), Anse Mitan (opposite windsurfing rental), Anse à l'Ane at Rue de la Dorade, Anse à l'Ane opposite Nid Tropical restaurant, and Anse à l'Ane at Frantour hotel.

Facilities

Anse Mitan has showers, toilets near the lifeguard post, and a restaurant (Le Baracuda). Bakoua has developed facilities. Anse à l'Ane has a basketball court near the beach and a fishing village.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by ARS (health authority) and DIREN (environment authority) with RNO (national observation network) data. Pollution risk is confirmed. Classification reclassification occurred between 1975 and 2006 directives. Two microbiological indicator organisms are tracked under the new directive.

Risks

Potential microbiological contamination sources identified on watersheds. Collective and individual wastewater systems, stormwater networks, and various activities present pollution risks. Moored boats at Anse Mitan and Anse à l'Ane.
