A bathing water area located off the coast of Monasterace in the Calabria region of southern Italy. The beach is sandy and pebbly with a gentle slope of 1.2% from the waterline to a depth of 5 metres. Underwater bars and ridges are present in series. The beach sediments range from 0.13 to 2 millimetres in grain size. The water quality is classified as excellent.

Coastal water body of the Riace-Santa Caterina dello Jonio water body. Beach area extends 0.98 square kilometres. The seabed has a mean slope of 1.2% from the shore to the 5-metre isobath, with underwater bars and ridges present in series. Sediment grain size ranges from 0.13 to 2 millimetres.

Location

Monasterace, Reggio Calabria province, Calabria region, Italy. The bathing area is located in territories opposite agricultural land between the Fiumara Assi and Fosso Bernardo, near the inhabited centre of Monasterace.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent. The area is monitored according to the coastal waters category designation.

Risks

Potential pollution source identified at the mouth of Fosso Bernardo. Short-term pollution events may occur from runoff and urban areas during heavy rainfall. No algal blooms or cyanobacterial proliferation has been recorded in the sea and inland waters in the past four years.
