A sandy-pebbly beach located along the SS 106 road at kilometer 137 in Calabria, Italy. The beach is situated on a coastal plain with a submarine slope of 1.4% from the shoreline to the 5-meter isobath. Submarine sediments range from 0.13 to 2 millimeters in grain size. The beach faces agricultural territories to the north of the Fiumara Assi and Fiumarella watercourses.

Coastal water body with sandy-pebbly beach. Average submarine slope of 1.4% from shoreline to 5-meter isobath. Single submarine bars or cordons present. Beach and submarine sediment grain size ranges from 0.13 to 2 millimeters. Bathing area extension is 2.416 square kilometers.

Location

Monasterace, Reggio Calabria province, Calabria region, Italy. The bathing area is located between the Fiumarella di Guardavalle and the Fiumara Assi watercourses.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Identified sources of pollution include the Fiumarella di Guardavalle and the mouth of Fiumara Assi. Wastewater treatment is provided by a biological treatment plant with activated sludge located in Monasterace at Campo Marzio.

Risks

Short-term pollution events have been identified: rainwater runoff and accidental treatment plant malfunction with overflow from agricultural areas and the Monasterace wastewater treatment plant at Campo Marzio. No algal blooms or cyanobacterial proliferation have been recorded in the past four years.
