Water Quality

Water quality classification conducted according to Decreto-Lei 135/09 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency: every 2 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution events occurred during the 2024 bathing season. Potential pollution sources include faecal contamination from two malfunctioning septic tanks in the immediate vicinity and a wastewater treatment plant located upstream in Valongo do Côa.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface flow of tributaries during rainfall, leading to entrainment of microbiological load, or due to discharges of untreated effluents in case of sewage treatment plant malfunction. No historical records of cyanobacteria, macroalgae, or phytoplankton proliferation.
