Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions due to short-term pollution events were recorded in the 2024 bathing season. Sampling frequency is every 2 weeks.

Risks

Short-term pollution (lasting less than 72 hours) is unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface flow from tributaries during rainfall, causing microbiological contamination. Untreated effluent discharges from wastewater treatment plant malfunctions may also occur. Potential sources include faecal contamination from upstream creeks or damage to sanitation infrastructure (WWTP Vale das Éguas and WWTP Rapoula do Côa). No record of cyanobacteria, macroalgae, or phytoplankton proliferation.
