Bärensee is a 6-hectare former gravel pit that filled with groundwater, located at the northwestern edge of Hanau between the A66 motorway and Erlensee. The lake lies in a forested recreation area and has a maximum depth of 3.83 metres and average depth of 2.63 metres. Due to its shallow depth, the entire water body warms significantly in summer and nutrients bound in sediment can be easily released under certain conditions. The lake is characterised by a large campground on its southern, western and northern shores and is also intensively used for fishing.
