Barra is a Type I beach located in the Vouga River basin, part of the Atlantic Ocean water body CWB-I-2. The beach is situated south of Meia Laranja beach and is surrounded by a consolidated urban center experiencing strong demand. The bathing water is subject to the influence of Ria de Aveiro regarding quality and hydrodynamics.

Season

7 June to 14 September 2025. Sampling frequency: once every two weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No history of short-term pollution episodes. No days of bathing advisory or prohibition due to short-term pollution in the 2024 bathing season. Quality data available at www.apambiente.pt, www.snirh.pt, and infoagua.apambiente.pt.

Risks

Potential microbiological pollution sources include port, domestic, industrial and recreational activities; increased precipitation intensity; microbial load from estuary water influx; solid waste from beach activities; oceanic litter; bird colonies; and high number of users. Cyanobacteria proliferation is less likely. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation are likely.
